In New York State, a certified copy of a judgment of divorce can be obtained by the County Clerk's office of the Court where the divorce was filed. A certified copy is discernible from a plain copy because it contains an embossed/raised seal and signature of the County Clerk. It is also possible to obtain a one-page certificate of dissolution of marriage from the New York State Department of Health, however it is important to check with the receiving office if this document can be used in lieu of the Judgment of Divorce.
RELATED DOCUMENTS: A certificate of no appeal, issued by the same County Clerk's office, is sometimes necessary to prove that the divorce is final. If the divorce is used in connection to a new marriage, it is important to prepare a single status affidavit or a license to marry in a foreign jurisdiction.
