An apostille on a power of attorney enables you to handle family matters or conduct a transaction through your designated agent located in a foreign country.

It is essential that the power of attorney is prepared according to the requirements of the country where it is to be used. To guarantee compliance, a foreign lawyer can prepare the power of attorney. If a foreign lawyer is not available to draft a power of attorney, you can find samples on the Consulate website or by searching the Internet.

If you are fluent in the foreign language and feel comfortable editing the document, you can sign it directly in the foreign language without the need to translate it into English.  It is important to verify specific requirements, in addition to the notarization, such as the need for witness at the time of the signing or the need to enclose a copy of an ID or of a foreign tax ID.

If you hold dual citizenship in the foreign country, you may contact your Consulate to verify if a notary at the Consulate can draft and notarize the power of attorney.
